The Misfits, She Demons & Voltang Rock Out At The Phoenix Concert Theatre
On October 16th The Xtra Mile was live at the Misfits show at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, which was definitely a night to remember and featured a total of 6 bands, both locally and from out of town.
One of the bands that played that night was Voltang from Hamilton, Ontario. The band consists of Jake Reimer on Vocals, Dan Serre on Bass, Evan Dreager on Guitar and backup vocals, Robbie Gaskin on lead guitar and Paul Maxwell on Drums. Voltang was the first band to play that night, and boy did they ever start the night off with a bang! The boys from Hamilton sure know how to bring the fun. Every member on stage was extremely energetic and knew how to put on an awesome show. Playing songs from their newest album some of which included Kingfisher and Hermaphrodite, allowed everyone in the audience to get a feel for the band. I do have to say considering that they were the first band of the night they had a pretty sizeable crowd.
Around 10:10pm, She Demons took the stage. The She Demons are a five piece all girl band that consists of Priya Panda (Vocals), Jessica Goodwin (Drums), Kiki Wongo (Guitar), Alicia Vigil (Bass) and Constance Day (Guitar) This band was brought together by Jerry Only (Lead Singer) of the Misfits. Before this tour most of the girls have never played together so I was curious to see how they would be live. As soon as they got on stage they got the crowd hyped up. This Horror-pop-punk group played a number of songs some of which included their single “Fresh Blood” while their performance wasn’t perfect; their stage presence was really good. Each member knew how to play their respective instruments really well and every girl on stage moved around and knew how to keep the crowd entertained. Typically any exaggerated movements or facial expressions tend to be cheesy, however it would have to say it works for the She Demons; in a way it added to the performance. The only thing I think they lacked during this show was chemistry on stage. Overall, I have to say that their performance wasn’t bad, considering that they only really came together a couple months ago. Truthfully I look forward to seeing how the She Demons progress in the future.
It was finally the time everyone in the crowd had been waiting for, The Misfits! Even before the house lights went down the crowd was getting ready for them to start. As soon as the house lights went down the crowd went crazy. This was my first time seeing the Misfits so I was excited to see how they would be live. The Misfits launched into “Static Age” Followed by “TV Casualty” and “Some Kinda Hate”. This tour was to commemorate their album “Static Age” so during their time on stage they played the album front to back, along with a couple other well-liked songs. While there were many things to like about this performance the one thing that should out to me was how much energy everyone in the band had. Both Jerry Only and Jerry Jr. were running back and forth between 3 microphones all night. It kept things interesting compared to some other bands I’ve seen at other shows that stand at one microphone all night. Now I know that none of the members on stage are any of the original members but Jerry Only (Lead Vocals) along with the two other members have been doing an amazing job keeping this iconic band alive. Overall the Misfits played a killer set, every moment from start to finish was energetic and full of great songs.
