Pete Murray sits down with The Extra Mile to chat about new music

Reflecting on ten years ago and hoping that you can relive that moment again in the present is something that cannot be done. Music does help us look back, which is why Australia’s Pete Murray did exactly that. It has been a decade since his album “Feeler”, was released. We sat down with him and asked why now, and what makes today so different from the first time.

How does it feel to be back in Canada?
It’s good! With my first album Feeler, 10 years ago when the album came out I expected to come out to North America because I thought the music would really suit the atmosphere here. Most of my influences were from North America so that fit too. The record label didn’t really agree, so they sent me to the UK. It was really frustrating and 8 years later and I said “nothings happening, let me do my thing”. And here I am now.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
10 years is too far away. Heck even 5 years is too far away. I want to make the next album, an album like Feeler where I can connect to people and has a meaning. I want to enjoy life and have fun with it. There would be no point otherwise. It’s challenging to come back, but it’s rewarding.

You’ve been driving around the whole country, what’s been the highlight?
The Rockies. I’ve backpacked around Canada before and it was a beautiful part of the world. Fell in love with it and I keep coming back. Nothing like Australia.

Sports was a huge part of your life, how did music come into play?
I was 22 and I was studying for medicine so I thought I would work in a clinic. I had a friend who came into my room one night and he said let’s pick up a guitar, let’s learn how to play. I did covers for a while and then my friends encouraged me to write my own music and if it weren’t for them I don’t think I would have done it. If someone at school told me that I would be really well known, I would have laughed in their face.

Pete Murray has been touring all over Canada. His show is filled with acoustics, a band and a special intimate performance that will take your breath away. Catch him in your city before he heads out. We also have a couple of signed albums that we would like to giveaway! Let us know in the comments that you would like to win.
