Review ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’

Autobots, unite! Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – A Transformative Leap Forward for the Franchise

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts marks a highly anticipated return following the 2018 film Bumblebee and The Last Knight. Rise of the Beasts was definitely a lot better than the last two films in the franchise. We get some introductions to new cast members and bring back some of our beloved Autobots such as Optimum Prime (voice by Peter Cullen) and also feature the Maximals from the Transformers: Beast Wars TV series. The film evokes a sense of childhood nostalgia as these iconic characters come back to life on the big screen.

The storyline picks up from the ancient era of 1994,  serving as a prequel to the events of the original “Transformers” film. We witness the release of an ancient artifact in the world for safekeeping, setting the stage for the film’s events. Taking place in New York City where we are introduced to Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) a former military electronics wiz who is aimlessly looking for a job to support his family, especially his little brother Kris (Dean Scott Vazquez).  Simultaneously, another storyline follows Elena (Dominque Fishback) who is an artifacts expert working at a museum,  constantly striving to prove herself to her boss, despite her remarkable intelligence being underutilized as an intern. The film effectively addresses issues of racial inequality highlighting the struggles and marginalization experienced by both characters who are people of color, which is a refreshing and socially relevant aspect of the story.

As the events unfold,  Noah’s decision to steal what he believes is a Porshe leads to a surprising discovery that it actually is Autobot Mirage (Voiced by Pete Davidson).  Noah quickly realizes he has become entangled with a group of giant robots leading him to assist them in retrieving the Transwarp key in return for exchange for some cash to help his family. Meanwhile, Elena finds herself in possession of an ancient artifact with symbols on it, and driven by her desire to uncover its secrets, she steals it for closer inspection, only to discover that it is the Transwarp key itself, inadvertently opening a portal that brings forth the Decepticons- the bad guys. Things get super messy really fast, as Noah and the Autobots strive to obtain the key while simultaneously battling against the Decepticons who are determined to steal it.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the film is undoubtedly the vibrant and charismatic personalities of the Autobots. In particular, Davidson delivers numerous punch lines that truly showcase his comedic personality.  The voice cast was exceptionally well-suited for their roles, with standout performances from the Maximals, such as Optimum Primal (voiced by Ron Pearlman) and the Falcon Airazor (voiced by Michelle Yeoh) whose angelic voice brings Falcon Aritzor to life. Additionally, Wheeljack(voiced by Cristo Fernandez)  provides delightful moments of gleeful laughter, reminiscent of his memorable performance as Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a promising step forward, skillfully incorporating the human element amidst the epic clash of good and evil. The characters Noah and Elena forge a captivating connection with the audience, creating a heartful bond with the audience. This film successfully combines thrilling robot battles, world-saving missions, and moments of genuine humor and heart. If you’re seeking an engaging cinematic experience where robots fight to protect humanity while offering moments of laughter and heartfelt emotion, this movie is definitely worth your time.
