‘Review’ Morbius
Is Moribus a SSU letdown?
Upon the initial release of the Morbius trailer, it presented an intriguing concept: a film set in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. This origin story revolves around Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a dedicated researcher grappling with a disease, devoting his life to discovering a cure. However, the plotline feels somewhat familiar, as we encounter a dedicated protagonist transforming himself into a living vampire. Additionally, the inclusion of Morbius’ orphan best friend Milo ( Matt Smith), who ultimately becomes his enemy, adds complexity that can be challenging to follow and comprehend.
The conflict between Morbius and Milo feels increasingly contrived, leading to a sense of repetition throughout the film. The transformation scenes depicting demonic faces lack a sense of realism and veer towards a somewhat whimsical tone. Moreover, Morbius’ superpowers fail to live up to the anticipated greatness, leaving them somewhat underwhelming. Ultimately, the overall storyline falls short of delivering the expected climactic impact, leaving a sense of anticlimax.
One of the notable highlights of the film is witnessing Matt Smith’s captivating performance, including a memorable dancing scene, showcasing his exceptional talent as an actor. However, it is disappointing to observe Jared Leto’s portrayal, especially considering his impressive filmography which includes notable roles in films like Joker, Dallas Buyers Club, and House of Gucci. In this particular film, Leto’s commitment to the character appears lacking compared to his previous performances, leaving the impression that he may not have been as fully engaged or invested in the role.
While it may not be considered the worst film ever made, it doesn’t rank among my favorites. It could potentially offer some entertainment value to certain viewers, but overall, I found it challenging to stay engaged and complete the film.
