TIFF 2021 Reviews ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’
One of the most famous scandals in the 70s and 80s, The Eyes of Tammy Faye directed by Michael Showalter centers on the rise and fall and redemption of Tammy and Jim Bakker (Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield). The Eyes of Tammy Faye first premiered at TIFF on Sept 12. The story follows the biopic sequence in 1989 where Jim Bakker was convicted of fraud, and his wife Tammy, who was in the spotlight for her makeup, eyelashes, big hair, and her singing voice who falls downward through addiction and their marriage falling apart.
The film was an okay watch but Chastain deserves an Oscar for this phenomenal performance and she really allows us to see the misconception of Tammy Faye and gets a better perspective of who she really was. Tammy was always judged on her makeup and mascara but never what she did, and Chastain really captures that moment for the audience.
