#Review Triple 9

Action films can be a hit or a miss with either underdeveloped characters or underwhelming storylines masked by generous visuals effects and fast-paced camera work. While Triple 9 does not necessarily exceed expectations it does deliver stellar performances from an ensemble cast, including Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackie, Kate Winslet, and Woody Harrelson, just to name a few.

With the first ten minutes already setting the tone for the rest of the movie, we are presented with a violent bank robbery conducted by four men whom we eventually learn are actually crooked cops working for the Israeli-Russian mafia led by Irena, (Kate Winslet).

Violent, gory, and a touch reminiscent of the Departed and Training Day, Triple 9 does not give us much room to decide which of the characters to root for. Audiences are left hanging until the very end which is great if you’re a thrill-seeking junkie and enjoy the good cop vs bad cop genre.

And while Director John Hillcoat cast incredible talent into his film i.e Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson, their work is the only thing keeping the movie afloat. Filled with plot holes and question marks, viewers are not sure why crooked cops are working for the mafia, only that they are.

Though these uncertainties arise many times during the film, if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush and a good time, then Triple 9 isn’t a complete waste of time.
