#Review Night School

Did Kevin Hart’s latest film, Night School pass the grade? Night School follows Teddy Walker (Kevin Hart) who goes back to finish high school 17 years later by passing the GED exam. Paired with an unconventional group, and his teacher Carrie (Tiffany Haddish), we follow along as the band of grown students all attend a crammed night school in an attempt to graduate. Just like any other film produced by Kevin Hart, the humour stays consistent. If you have ever watched any of his films, the one-liners and self-deprecating humour won’t fail to make you laugh. The characters and general plotline of this movie is heavily exaggerated, to begin with, but extremely relatable. Which is something Hart has mastered throughout his light-hearted, comedic style.

As we go through the film, a reoccurring plotline is how Teddy constantly feels ‘stupid or dumb’ because he was never able to graduate, and as an adult has skipped his way through life by working sales. Although polished with over fabricated humour and storylines that keep the film engaging and hilarious, the central message in the film is something that the audience can relate and even reminisce to. We all can remember cramming for a test and feeling helpless at times, right? Along with that, Carrie is not only the mentor that Teddy needs to pass his exam, but also the teacher we all wanted to believe in us growing up.

The unusual yet endearing friendships created laced with inspirational themes of perseverance and self-acknowledgement is perfectly timed as some of us are heading into our 4th week of the semester. A light-hearted film filled with humorous arguments between the diverse comedic leads, and ongoing gags that will keep you laughing for 111 minutes straight.

Universal Pictures releases Night School on Friday, September 28, 2018
