Review: Disclosure Day
Steven Spielberg has always had a way of making us look up at the sky and wonder what else might be out there, and Disclosure Day brings him right back into the world of aliens with a story that asks one pretty big question. What would happen if we finally found out we weren’t alone?
Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, Disclosure Day imagines a world where proof of extraterrestrial life can no longer be hidden and suddenly the truth belongs to everyone.
Emily Blunt, as always, does an incredible job. She has this ability to make even the most unbelievable situations feel real, which is especially important in a movie like this. The film isn’t just about aliens existing, but about what discovering that truth would actually mean for humans and how we would react if everything we thought we knew suddenly changed. And that’s what I found the most interesting about Disclosure Day. It actually made me question how much we really know.
There have been stories about UFOs and extraterrestrial life for decades, especially around places like Area 51 and Nevada’s Extraterrestrial Highway. Obviously, we don’t know what’s real and what isn’t, but watching Disclosure Day made me think about all of those stories again. If there really was proof that something else existed, would governments tell us? And if they didn’t, what would happen when that information finally came out?
Coming from Spielberg, it was also impossible for me not to think about E.T. There is something nostalgic about watching him return to aliens more than 40 years later, but Disclosure Day looks at the idea from a completely different perspective. E.T. made us wonder what it would be like to actually meet something from another world. Disclosure Day made me think about what would happen if the entire world found out they were real. It wasn’t necessarily the idea of aliens themselves, but the reality of disclosure and what it would mean for all of us.
Disclosure Day is interesting, thought provoking and another reminder of why Spielberg has been able to tell these kinds of stories for so long. It takes something we’ve been questioning for decades and brings it into a modern world where keeping a secret from seven billion people might be more difficult than ever.
And by the end, you might find yourself questioning what’s actually out there too.
