Lavazza IncluCity Festival Review ‘Una piccola impresa meridionale’
“Una piccola impresa meridionale,” is a charming Italian gem. The film is directed by Rocco Papaleo who stars in his film. This delightful 2013 film blends drama, comedy, and a touch of surrealism, all set against the backdrop of a picturesque coastal town in Southern Italy.
At the heart of the story is Don Constantino (played by Rocco Papaleo himself), a defrocked priest who returns to his mama’s home. His love story unfolds in an unconventional way: he falls for a woman who, in turn, falls for the priest—but not the man. The expressive faces of the characters mirror the enchanting southern landscape, and the play of light is nothing short of breathtaking.
Don Costantino finds himself banished to a lighthouse—a charming structure by the sea. But this lighthouse lacks running water and is filled with cast-offs, rubbish, and old furniture. It’s a diamond in the rough, a place where hope and healing intertwine. As Don Costantino navigates his new abode, he encounters a colorful ensemble. Rosamaria (Don Costantino’s sister) and Valbona (Magnolia’s sister) bring a narrative of hope for a better future. Arturo, Rosamaria’s cuckolded spouse, seeks healing as he moves forward. And then there’s Magnolia—an open, carefree, alluring former prostitute—who takes over the workshop upon her arrival.
The lighthouse becomes a hub, drawing in Arturo, Rosamaria, Valbona, and even a family of roofers. Their interactions create dramatic and heartwarming moments that propel the film toward its natural conclusion. Riccardo Scamarcio shines as Arturo, while Barbora Bobulova’s Magnolia exudes chutzpah. Rocco Papaleo’s portrayal of Don Costantino adds depth, and Sarah Felberbaum’s Valbona brings warmth. Claudia Potenza as Rosamaria, Giuliana Lojodice as Mother Stella, Giovanni Esposito as Raffale, Susy Del Giudice as Maddalena, Giorgio Colangeli as Emanuele, and Giampiero Schiano as Jennifer round out the principal characters.
“Una piccola impresa meridionale.” isn’t just about charming landscapes and witty dialogue. It delves into accepting same-sex couples, non-traditional families, and the beauty of self-determination. The film bathes in sunlight, sand, and sea, inviting viewers to savor life’s simple pleasures.
This beautiful film, with its sumptuous scenes, invites you to carve out a mental trip to Southern Italy. Breathe in the landscape, savor the warmth, and revel in the company of Italians breaking bread. The film is a cinematic dish best enjoyed with a side of laughter and a dash of gravitas.
