Is The Postmark Hotel Newmarket worth it?

Exploring The Postmark Hotel: An In-Depth Review of Newmarket’s Luxury Stay

Newmarket has been rapidly evolving, with trendy, modern shops popping up throughout town, making it the perfect spot for a luxury boutique hotel. On August 9th, the much-anticipated Postmark Hotel officially opened its doors to the public. Once the historic Newmarket Post Office at 180 Main Street, this landmark has been beautifully transformed by Archive Hospitality Group, the creators behind Toronto’s iconic Gladstone House and The Broadview Hotel.

The Postmark Hotel boasts 55 contemporary guest rooms, a distinctive lobby, a stunning rooftop restaurant called Overlea, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and an engaging art program. What we adored most about this hotel is its chic, vibrant design, seamlessly blending modern artistic touches with a nostalgic, old-world charm.

Room rates start at $220 to $368 CAD (Opening Special: 20% off the Best Available Rate). From standard to premium rooms, each offers luxurious French bedding, soft ambient lighting, high-speed internet, Smart TVs, and a thoughtfully curated selection of in-room amenities.

The Backstory

The Postmark Hotel originally started as a Post Office is 1914, and it’s always been a place for connection. “The Postmark Hotel has always been something special, ever since its inception as a post office in 1914,” said Avi Wulfand, general manager of The Postmark Hotel. “We are thrilled to bring to life this community hub in the heart of Newmarket.”

The Lobby

As you enter the hotel, you’re greeted by a stunning lobby with high ceilings and a perfectly curated ambiance. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of coffee, relaxing with cocktails, or simply taking in the atmosphere, the space feels inviting and versatile. It’s an ideal spot to settle in with your laptop and get some work done over coffee or to meet up with friends for drinks. The restaurant also serves as a great brunch destination. Since the hotel is still in its early stages, the current restaurant hours are listed below.

The Rooms

We stayed in the double room, and the first thing that struck me was the warm, inviting atmosphere. The space is quite generous, featuring luxurious French bedding that added a touch of elegance. The room was stocked with coffee and tea, along with a coffee pot, though figuring out how to heat the water wasn’t immediately clear. However, there was no fridge or full-length mirror, which would have been nice additions.

A standout feature was the spacious walk-in closet, complete with a robe and hair dryer. The bathroom was a highlight, offering luxurious, organic toiletries crafted by Consonant Skin+Care, including shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hand wash, and even foaming face wash.

The high-speed internet worked flawlessly, and the lighting in the room was refreshingly bright. Each room also features carefully curated Canadian artwork, adding a unique touch. There’s even a mini-bar menu for room service, making it easy to enjoy refreshments without leaving your room.

Amentities

One of the standout features of this hotel is the Lounge on the main floor. It felt like a spacious, stylish hangout spot for guests to unwind. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a modern, artistic vibe, complete with a stunning electric fireplace, pool table, chess, games, a record player, a massive TV, and even a bathroom. We ended up spending most of our evening relaxing on the oversized couch, watching a movie.

Adjacent to the Lounge is a cozy boutique gym. While compact, it offers all the essentials, including a treadmill, rower, dumbbells, bench, kettlebells, and resistance bands—perfect for a quick workout.

Overlea Restaurant

At the top level, the stunning rooftop restaurant, Overlea, offers both brunch and dinner with breathtaking views of Newmarket. The space is open and airy, making it perfect for a special night out, with outdoor seating on both sides providing scenic vistas. During our visit, we tried a few cocktails—the Empress On Main, Scarlett Letter, and Posutokado. My personal favorite was the Scarlett Letter (Red), which had a delightful mezcal twist.

For starters, we had the East Coast Oysters with Verjus & Pear Mignonette, Tabasco lemon, and horseradish—some of the freshest oysters I’ve tasted in Ontario. We also tried the Peaches + Ricotta, which was my personal favorite and an absolute must-try. The Heirloom Baby Beets were another highlight, especially if you’re a beet lover.

For the main course, I opted for the Glazed Maitake Mushroom, served with sweet corn, black truffle, and chive-cured egg yolk. While the portion was smaller than expected, the flavors were incredibly rich, and I’d highly recommend it.

Dessert was a treat, with only two options to choose from—and we tried both. The lemon dessert, a deconstructed lemon meringue, was my favorite, tangy and refreshing. The chocolate dessert was rich and decadent, so pairing it with a coffee would have been perfect.

Overall, Overlea is a top choice for a memorable dinner with exceptional service, ambiance, and flavors. Be prepared to spend around $80-$100 per person if you’re having a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. It’s well worth the experience!

The Location

Situated in the heart of Newmarket, the location of the hotel couldn’t be more ideal. On-site parking is available for $25, and there’s also free street parking nearby, thanks to the town’s small and walkable nature. Right next door is Wine on Main, the first self-serve wine bar and bottle shop in the GTA and Ontario. Guests can explore a rotating selection of wines from around the world, using self-service wine dispensers to sample before committing to a full glass or bottle, and just across the street is a charming coffee shop. If you’re driving, there are additional restaurants and attractions only 5 to 10 minutes away, making it a convenient base for exploring the area.

Overall thoughts

Overall, I believe The Postmark Hotel is well worth the stay if you’re seeking a luxurious experience. While it may come with a higher price, especially if you dine at their restaurants, the hotel delivers on its promise of luxury. The lounge alone makes it a standout, and its prime location is an added bonus.
