Interview ‘The Amazing Race Canada’ finalist contestants Michael and Tyson
Michael and Tyson, one of the four finalist teams from “The Amazing Race Canada,” shared their reflections on their journey during an interview with “The Extra Mile”
TEM (The Extra Mile) : What motivated you guys to come on The Amazing Race Canada and whos idea was it?
Tyson: Michael and I were sitting there. We were taking a trip to London for his birthday. And him and I and love to travel. I think you can really see that in the show that we love to race, we love to experience their different cities and cultures. So we saw a preview on the TV, and basically just thinking right away, I was like, we can definitely do something like that. I’m like, that looks like a Tuesday for us. So we got a video together. We got a video together and traveling the world. Yeah, so we sent it in, and sure enough, they liked it and then we continued to use that as kind of a motivating platform for a few months back to continue to travel and just kind of show the show that I mean, this is what we enjoy to do. We want to inspire people to, you know, go and indulge in different cultures, in different cities and, you know, try different experiences.
TEM: So is there anything that you did in particular to kind of prepare for the show after finding out what you guys are going to be on it?
Michael: Oh, the preparation for this show started way back when, you know, we both got drafted into professional baseball. mean, you can even, you know, debate that it went way back to when we were five years old. But this is this is our everyday life, you know, like we’ve been traveling with baseball. We’ve been jumping on buses, not getting any sleep, and then having to play that next day, jumping on airplanes, getting traded to another team. So, you know, to be able to jump on the amazing race, Canada is just like nothing is fake. This is our everyday. Like Tyson said, this is a Tuesday for us.
TEM: So then did you what was the task that you found? Let’s say the most fun and the most challenging.
Tyson : The most fun I would I would have to go with the Oh, it’s a toss-up between John and Connor and the calling and Matt. I mean, there’s such great guys and you can just tell right from the beginning how, you know, sincere and genuine they are as people and we felt that right away and we love those boys. I know that we’re going to have a long-standing friendship with them. And I think the most challenging I would have to say again, you got to give it a toss up.This was a very competitive season between Kevin and Gerleen and Lauren and Nicole, you know, two very strong teams and with the different strengths really entirely. So they both challenge you in a different way.
TEM: Well, what about you, Michael? I guess you can answer the question. The most fun, the most fun and challenging challenge.
Michael: I would say the most fun for me was running into Mosaic Stadium and having to catch the football pass by, know, QB number one, one, know, that stadium is absolutely gorgeous. Two, like the fans there were kind of like super electric and then to see your boy wearing a watermelon head on his, like it was just a completely amazing challenge. then, and then I got to hit somebody like I’ve been playing. in baseball where I hit the baseball, I get to finally hit somebody again, going back to my, you know, my, my, my hey days when I was 13, that was definitely one of the most fun challenges. And the most challenging challenge has to be the challenge that we use an Express Pass on, the puzzle. Express Pass, we’re talking about if we can get the Express Pass, we’re going to win a leg, you know, we had to use it to survive. then looking back at it, I don’t know. If we didn’t have that Express Pass, are we even talking to Michelle right now? Like, are we at the house? Are we going into the finals? I have no idea. That definitely saved us.
TEM: So, what would you guys say is like one of the most valuable lesson that you learned, just on your whole experience, on being on the amazing race Canada.
Michael: One of the most valuable lessons, you know, I’ve learned by being on the amazing race, is definitely to keep challenging myself. It’s easier to do that when, you know, you’re playing when you’re playing professional sports, you challenge yourself every single day on the field baseball you know, you can get into such routines under everyday life that you have to remember to continue to challenge yourselves with, you know, with relationships or a different challenges are doing stuff outside of your comfort zone, so you can continue to evolve or else you’re gonna be stuck and you know this race definitely challenges you every single time you rip over rip open that glue.
TEM: What are your thoughts kind of you head into the finale?
Tyson: Right now our thoughts heading to finale or this is it you know everything everything off the table now There’s really no holding back. I remember or I know that We’re really gonna have to lean on each other and we’re really gonna have to continue to push each other because We know that there’s gonna be some challenges coming up that are gonna be extremely difficult and We’ve got to make sure that we’re just there for each other and that we’re giving each other a great support system
TEM: What would it mean for you guys to win the amazing race Canada?
Michael: You know, this is such a, you know, a high-end show from from my standpoint, you know, watching it growing up to win the amazing race Canada would be incredible. You know, you play professional baseball, you get to travel, you get to do this, but to throw like the winners of amazing race Canada season 10 would be absolutely incredible.
Tyson: It’s truly amazing for us, our families, our kids, because I know our kids really love the show, and I know that they really love to see their coaches going out there and struggling and going into battle and going to that adversity that we lay on them all the time. So, you know, I think that would be probably the biggest thing for me is, you know, to win it for them and, you know, continue to show them that, you know, you got to embrace the unknown and make sure you’re always challenging yourself outside of your comfort zone.
TEM: We’re here all about going the extra mile. So what’s one thing that you do on your professional life, daily life, a personal life that you do where you go the extra mile?
Michael: Yeah, besides running that extra mile, I think embracing the unknown, I’ll continue to say it continues to jump into things that aren’t necessarily comfortable for you to find that different branch off the tree, know, to find that different route in your journey. And if you can do that, and you can do that for a consistent basis, you will figure out how to go that extra mile and, you know, evolve into a person you might have never seen to evolve into before.
TEM : Anything else you like to add in Tyson?
Tyson: I would say that, you know, I feel like I’ve always had to go the extra mile growing up with a hearing disability and that thing that could be very comfortable and normal to everybody else’s was always something that the beginning was super difficult for me. So I think that’s why I made it known to embrace the unknown and force myself and challenge myself to do everything. Every little thing in life doesn’t matter if it’s on the sports side, on the artsy side and I always just wanted to keep myself guessing and continue to have all the experiences I can.
