Best known as the winner of season 4 of The Next Star, 16-year old Charlie Storwick is slowly on her way to becoming Canada’s next big star. With a lead role on YTV’s “Some Assembly Required”, this talented artist can do it all. She recently dropped her latest single “Ghosts” which now available on Itunes and will be playing at the YTV’s Summer Beach Bash on August 8.

We caught up with the talented singer about her new single and what’s next for her career. Read the interview below!

You won The Next Star back in 2011, almost five years ago. How have you changed musically since then?
That’s a great question, definitely my style of writing. I would say I definitely made my music more edgy. My voice got more of a rasp in it, it’s definitely aged a lot, which I’m really enjoying. It’s fun to play piano and explore and it’s matured a lot.

Now you’re on “Some Assembly Required”. You do both acting and singing. Is there one thing you prefer more than the other?
You’re tricky (laughs) Definitely music. It’s just where my hearts been my whole life, it’s my oxygen. But I do love doing both. But definitely music, it’s the staple. We all have one.

There’s a lot of hard work that goes into acting and singing. Is there one major difference you see between the two?
Definitely one thing they have in common is the emotion, which is what I love about both. But difference is one involves a lot of standing, and one involves not. (laughs) Just kidding. All the people you meet. Especially in acting, I’ve met some really inspiration amazing people, and that’s definitely something new for me, which I’m really loving.

The character you portray “Piper”, I read in an earlier interview you love her clothing style. She’s also a tech freak. Would you ever consider working with technology?
Like working at Best Buy? If I was good at technology, which I am not the best, I would show off those technological skills, like “let me show you how to fix your iPhone” (laughs)

Back to the music, our readers love new and up coming artists. So why should people listen to you?
I think that with my music I’m trying to explore this more psychedelic genre. Instead of writing a love song as my first single. I wrote something about “Ghosts”. I’m trying to give this new appeal to pop that kind of got this dark edge. So it’s pop with combat boots.  I think it’s kind of a new sound that the music industry could use, and I’m really hoping people are going to enjoy it.

I just listened to it, It’s really good. Like you said, it does have more of a darker tone to it. Can you describe the process behind it?
Yeah absolutely. I actually wrote the concept for the song on my own on my iPhone really late at night years ago. I was staying up really late, I do that a lot. I was at the piano, I was playing around, and I wrote down these lyrics to “Ghosts” and I brought them to a music team three years later and I think the inspiration was this point where I am at my life, just imagination can take you anywhere. Especially now, in my career, anything can happen. As long as you’re willing to step over these boundaries and explore and make your own lane. You can do anything with it. So I thought with “Ghosts” I can make this imagination outlet for people to kind of close their eyes and image they’re at a mansion with ghosts, or they’re dancing, it can be anything. It’s a metaphor. It can be a person, it can be a setting, I’m really excited about it.

You’re a songwriter-singer. When it comes to a performance, as an audience member. What do you think is most important? The lyrics, the performance, or the music?
For me, it’s always just been the music. That’s where I find for an audience performing is the connection. And that’s the magic of the show, it;s making the connection with music. But I think it’s different, it depends on the person, who’s listening.

You’re performing at the YTV’s Summer Beach Bash. Will you be performing “Ghosts”? What can we expect?
It is a secret actually. Myself and my co-star Kolton Stewart from “Some Assembly Required”, we’re going to be performing together. He’s one cool dude, one talented dude. We’re going to be doing some duet, some solos, who knows maybe “Ghosts”. Who knows? It’s going to be a party, I’m really excited. It was really fun last year. To do it again, it’s going to be a party.

We’re all about The Xtra Mile. How do you go The Xtra Mile?
I have to think about that.I want to give a solid answer. (Laughs) The Xtra Mile, with hard work. And keeping in the back of my mind to always stay grounded. and remember to honour what I love keeps me grounded. And that’s music and acting, so I always remember to honour that. You’re having a crazy day, and you forget what keeps you grounded. At the end of the day you always have to come back to what makes you who you are. And what keeps you passionate, and what makes you happy. Especially these days it’s been music and if I’m having a bad day, I need to remember “Don’t forget, Music is what keeps you grounded” You always have to come back to that.

Any final words?
