TIFF 2024 Review “Seeds’

Seeds is a powerful narrative that delves into the intersection of modernity and heritage, as it follows Ziggy, a social media influencer from a long line of farmers. This film, directed and written by Kaniehtiio Horn, which explores themes of cultural preservation, environmental justice, and the perils of corporate greed.

The story unfolds with Ziggy being hired by Nature’s Oath, a conglomerate that seemingly supports agricultural sustainability. However, as Ziggy navigates her new role, she uncovers the company’s sinister motives: they are after the precious seeds hidden by her grandmother, the only remaining cornbread and squash seeds of their kind. These seeds represent not just a genetic treasure but a deep-rooted connection to the land and her people.

Seeds weaves together a tale that is as much about the past as it is about the present. It showcases the struggle of Indigenous communities to protect their heritage and the very land Mother Earth placed on them. The film tackles the issue of corporate colonization, where Nature’s Oath, a company that controls a significant portion of the world’s agriculture, seeks to dominate and manipulate natural resources for profit.

This film not only tells a gripping story but also prompts viewers to reflect on their relationship with the environment and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It serves as a call to action, encouraging audiences to question the power dynamics at play in the world of agriculture and to consider the long-term implications of genetic modification and corporate control over the seeds that sustain us.

Seeds is a thought-provoking film that resonates on multiple levels, combining a powerful narrative with a timely and crucial message about the preservation of Indigenous culture and the fight against environmental colonization.
