Interview ‘The Amazing Race Canada’ contestants Michael and Amari
Michael and Amari , the sixth eliminated team from “The Amazing Race Canada,” shared their reflections on their journey during an interview with “The Extra Mile”
TEM (The Extra Mile) : What motivated you to go on The Amazing Race Canada and whose idea was it?
Michael: Well, what motivated me was the opportunity to share this experience with my son and compete. He moved away to college, and he was playing basketball, so we had this opportunity to apply for Amazing Race Canada, and I asked him if he wanted to join in, and he said absolutely.
TEM: Did you guys do anything in particular to prepare for the show? Any special routines?
Michael: Nothing, just being ourselves, staying active. Mario was fresh off of his first student-athlete playing day, so he was in shape and ready to rock. Yeah, he carried us through the whole season.
TEM: You didn’t do any, lpre-training, no extra time at the gym, nothing? You just kind of went for it?
Amari: I was already going six days a week for, I don’t know how many months, five months. I was in the shape of my life for that.
Michael: That’s why he beat me. That’s why he beat me in that race.
TEM: So, I mean, what would you say that, what’s like a specific strike that you feel that you brought to the team? You can say one thing about one another. Michael, what’s one thing that you think Amari really brought to the team and vice versa?
Michael: Amari brought leadership and joy. He always found the fun in what we were doing and he was able to take the lead on a number of occasions and always had my back. He’s definitely a strong leader.
Amari: I think he brought composure. He’s been in, he’s played in huge championship games before on a national stage. Being able to keep the composure with some of the challenges and help me stay locked in, that was something he brought.
TEM: So my next question is like, what would you say was your favorite challenge? And let’s say your favorite one and the hardest challenge.
Michael: For me, my favorite was curling. We had a blast. We were saying that we would have happily just stayed there the whole time and played every team, but because it was a race we had to move on, but we had a lot of fun with that. And I think, of course, what was the most challenging was the last challenge that inevitably got us with that conversion to make that purchase.
Amari: For me, personally, probably the repel, the adrenaline I got from that, and I was hoping for some more challenges like that, but that was personally my favorite, and same with me, the hardest was counting up the coins.
TEM: Do you have any advice, anything that you’d like to say for anyone that wants to join the show next season?
Amari: The biggest thing for the entirety of the audition process is just be yourself and have a good relationship with the person that you’re applying with. Because if you do get on the show, you’re going to be put to the test, your relationship.
TEM: My last question would be, so we’re all about going the extra mile, whether that be in your personal life or any sort of in your life. How would you say each of you guys go the extra mile on your day to day?
Michael : On the day to day, how I go the extra mile is doing whatever is necessary to get the job done. And for me specifically, when it comes to training, when I’m exhausted and fatigued, it’s pushing through that exhaustion and fatigue and continuing to train myself to push through those adversities. And that’s a way that I go the extra mile on a daily basis.
TEM: Anything you’d like to add in, Amari?
Amari: No, I think he got it on the same way.
