#INTERVIEW Natalie Mejia returns with debut EP L.O.V.E.
It’s been 9 years since Girlicious was first introduced on reality television. They were signed to Interscope Records and later to Universal Canada. The group took over the Canadian charts but disbanded in 2010. Former member Natalie Mejia, decided to still pursue her dreams and keep the dream alive by releasing her own debut solo E.P. titled “L.O.V.E.” Mejia is ready to take over the Canadian music charts once again, and The Xtra Mile had the opportunity to sit with the talented individual and chat about her new music.
It’s been a couple years since Girlicious. You’re now back making your own music. Can you tell us about your new music?
Yeah, my new music is my first solo debut, it’s pretty exciting. It’s L.O.V.E. Living on Vibrational Energy, I’m in love right now. It’s exciting to express that in my music and my creative stuff.
How come you decided to come back now after all these years?
I think it was the timing that lead me here. First of all Canada received Girlicious really well and just loved and supported us so much, and it’s like we have a huge fanbase here, I had to come back and visit the people that supported the project so much and give them new material. Plus I love Canada it’s really good vibes, good people and it’s awesome. So I’m just happy to be back.
What would you say is the biggest thing you took from Girlicious that helped launch your career now?
Basically the experience itself. It taught me a lot of professionalism, it’s like a boot camp really, the Ins and the other side of the business, that you don’t see from the outside perspective. So I really got to see the inner workings of how everything really goes down on the business structure. What it takes as far as entertainment, what it takes like vocally, dance ability, stage performance, charisma and all that good stuff. I basically took all that good stuff and brought it with me.
For people who aren’t familiar with Girlicious music, would you say your sound is completely different?
I wouldn’t say it’s completely different. But it definitely has it’s differences, Girlicious’ music was dance music, it was pop, it was fun. It’s a little more not as risky, definitely more positive message, not saying Girlicious message wasn’t positive, but I think it was more about growing up and being a girl and having up. This is more about becoming a women, more about my experiences in love, relationship, it’s still dance and pop music. It’s essentially still my voice which was involved in Girlicious, it’s similar but just more grown and evolved.
Do you still talk to anyone in the group, even Robin Antin?
Yeah definitely, like my sister is a new group with Robin right now, so I just got off Facetime with Robin like yesterday, so we talk and everything’s going really good.
You have a show in September. What can fans expect of that show?
It’s basically the new EP. All the new material if you haven’t had the chance to get it, you should check it out on iTunes. High energy, big performance, different choreography than maybe what you seen online or on my showcase on VEVO. So it’s going to be a surprise, it’s going to be new never done before for me personally. I’m just going to give it my best and my all. So high energy.
We’re all about The Xtra Mile, how do you go the Xtra Mile?
The Xtra Mile, I just push myself. I’m constantly growing, constantly evolving and challenging myself and I really believe in change and growth, and constantly just pushing yourself. I work out and I try to work out everyday and just have my routine that keeps me personally and mentally emotionally spiritually strong.
