Review: ‘Bombshell’

Review : Bombshell

Featuring a ripped from the headlines story and a bevy of stars, Bombshell races into theatres this weekend looking to enter the awards race at the last minute.

The film features a semi-fictionalized account of the women of Fox News who faced years of sexual harassment from chairman Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) and how they proceeded to fight back. The film kicks off in 2015 with the Republic candidates’ debate where Fox News star Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) is moderating and where she spars with Donald Trump over his treatment of women. From there we’re introduced to Kelly’s colleague Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) who’s on her way out of the network after being fired by Roger. Completing the trio is young producer Kayla (Margot Robbie) who’s looking for her chance to make it on air.

All three women are equally ambitious but as the film goes on you can see the difficulties they face in a workplace where a culture of sexism and harassment run rampant.

All three leads shine in the film, making them an unstoppable force this awards season. Theron is a dead ringer for Kelly, perfectly emulating her husky voice and tough demeanour, while Kidman delivers a sympathetic performance as Carlson.

The scene-stealer though is definitely Robbie who gives a great comedic performance as the somewhat ditzy Kayla but also turns it around and delivers a heartbreaking one once she comes to realize what kind of monster Roger is.
